The houses around downtown Brandon were built when craftsmanship was the default and kitchens were workrooms, not showpieces. High ceilings, real plaster, woodwork with profiles you cannot replicate at any price. And kitchens that were designed for a cook, a wood stove, and absolutely no guests, ever.
Renovating these kitchens is a negotiation between eras. The house has dignity and opinions. The modern household has a dishwasher, a stand mixer the size of a small car, and expectations about natural light. Our job is to broker a peace where both sides win: period character intact, twenty-first century function delivered.
Old-house kitchens hide surprises, and we mean that fondly. Plaster over lath, wiring with a colourful past, plumbing that took the scenic route, floors that slope with the confidence of ninety years of settling. We open walls carefully, document what we find, and adjust with you. There is no "standard" downtown kitchen, which is why templated approaches fail here so reliably.
What works beautifully: keeping the home's soul while fixing its workflow. Apron sinks that suit the era. Cabinetry with furniture-like detailing, inset doors, real hardware. Lighting that respects high ceilings, pendants with presence, under-cabinet strips for the actual work. And layouts that borrow light from wherever the house offers it, because these kitchens were often the darkest room in the house.
If you own one of downtown's character homes, bring us your crooked walls and your tiny closed-off kitchen. We have seen it all, we have fixed most of it, and the results are the projects we are proudest to show. Start with a full remodel consultation and we will walk the space together.
