Surfaces worth touching

You will touch your countertops ten thousand times a year. Chop on them, lean on them, set hot things down in a hurry. They should be beautiful, yes, but first they should be honest about the job.

Stone countertop installation in Brandon Manitoba kitchen

Countertops are where kitchen design meets kitchen reality. The showroom sample is pristine. Your kitchen is where someone sets down a cast iron skillet without thinking, where turmeric escapes, where a teenager does homework directly on the surface. Picking a countertop is really picking a relationship with maintenance, and we would rather you choose with your eyes open.

Quartz forgives almost everything and asks for almost nothing, which is why it dominates. Granite brings movement no factory can fake, with a little more care required. Butcher block warms a kitchen like nothing else and wears its history visibly, which some people love and some people learn to love. We will walk you through the trade-offs straight, including what each one costs to live with, not just to buy.

Measured like it matters

Templating is the unglamorous step that decides everything. After your cabinets are set and level, we template the exact reality of your kitchen, every wall wobble, every out-of-square corner, the precise spot the range sits. Stone gets cut to that template, not to the plan. This is why the good installs look poured in place and the bad ones have caulk doing structural work.

Seams get placed where they disappear: along natural breaks, aligned with sink edges, never stranded in the middle of your main prep zone if we can help it. Edges get finished to the profile you chose, eased, bevelled or ogee, and polished so they feel as good as they look. Cutouts for sinks and cooktops are positioned to the millimetre, because a sixteenth off at the sink is a headache for a decade.

A countertop should meet the wall like it grew there. Caulk is a confession.

Choosing your material

Quartz: the pragmatist's choice. Non-porous, consistent, nearly indestructible in normal use. The patterns keep getting better, and for a busy family kitchen it is hard to argue with. Granite: each slab is one of one. It needs sealing and a little respect for acids, but the depth is real stone, not printed. Butcher block: warm, repairable, honest. It will show knife marks and water stories, sand them out or let them accumulate into patina.

Thickness changes the feel more than people expect. A chunky mitred edge reads luxurious; a slim profile reads modern. Waterfall ends on an island make a statement and protect the cabinet ends from the chaos of real life. We will show you samples in your actual light, because showroom lighting lies about everything.

Questions, answered

Usually two to three weeks for stone, less for butcher block. Templating happens after cabinets are set, so the countertop schedule follows the cabinet schedule.

Yes, if they are level and solid. We template to what is there. If they are not level, we will tell you before the stone is cut, because after is too late.

Quartz, by a comfortable margin. It resists stains, does not need sealing, and handles heat better than its reputation suggests, though trivets are still wise.
